PLAY ME IM YOURS MIXES

Posted: July 20th, 2010 | 2 Comments »

Play Me, I’m Yours, a public art project by Luke Jerram and presented by Sing For Hope, brought 60 pianos to the streets of New York City from June 21 to July 5 2010.

Christopher Marianetti and Jeremy Thal of Found Sound Nation spent two days traveling around NYC documenting the people, the performers, and the communities surrounding 10 different street pianos in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens.

In the following tracks Christopher Marianetti (NOPIANO) mixes two days of audio recordings, including interviews, performances, improvisations, and street sounds – using only material collected within 10 feet of each piano. The resulting mixes are part song, part interview, part story, collages.

Trip to New Orleans: Day 1&2

Posted: July 4th, 2010 | No Comments »

On Friday, we set out on our long awaited trip down to New Orleans. We’re tagging along with the young and talented folks from NY2NO, a student run urban agriculture and community outreach project. 5 years now since hurricane Katrina struck, we’ll be documenting attempts to build a green movement in the city’s most impoverished neighborhood – the 9th ward.

Before heading out from Philadelphia, we stopped by The Village of Arts and Humanities, a beautifully renovated arts complex in northern Philly and a partner for the trip. After a stroll through their gardens and a stop in at their youth-run cafe – we headed out.

23 hours, 6 states, and numerous pit stops later – our 12 person passenger van rolled up to New Orleans.

Our home base for the week is Blair Grocery, a preparatory school and educational center started by former New York school teacher Nat Turner. No, not that Nat Turner, this one.

We’ve decided to blog daily.  It’s an experiment.   See you tomorrow.

Thanks all of you for your help! We met and exceeded our Kickstarter goal, and have great projects in the works, collaborating with amazing young folks from Philly (who’ll be traveling down to New Orleans) and Chicago.

We’ve got some great projects brewing in Chicago and Philadelphia and we’ve partnered with some fantastic organizations in these cities: We the People Media, People for Community Recovery, Village of Arts and Humanities. We’ve launched a Kickstarter page to help raise additional funds for this work. If you haven’t seen Kickstarter – check it out! The way it works is simple: if you don’t raise ALL of your pledged amount your don’t get ANY of it. So we have all until MAY 31st and we’re getting close! So give and you shall receive. In return for your donation we give you madd cool wavy stuff!!!!

Co-directors Christopher Marianetti and Jeremy Thal traveled to Zimbabwe for two weeks to lead the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) Young Producers Project. Working with a group of 12 Zimbabwean musicians and artists, including pop music star Alexio Kawara, as well as youth, they began developing new works using music, poetry and personal narratives (interviews) to examine, reflect on, and respond to issues relating to HIV and AIDS in Zimbabwe. The project will culminate in the creation and distribution of an album. Excerpts from the forthcoming album were premiered in a group performance at HIFA on April 30th.
